Nursing Assistant
Do you get great satisfaction assisting people in need? Are you patient, understanding, and comfortable following a routine? As a nurse assistant, you will care for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. You will tend to the daily needs of those confined to hospitals, residential care facilities, and their homes.
Nursing Assistant
In nursing homes and other long-term care situations, you will often be the principal caregiver, having more contact with residents than other staff members and developing positive, caring relationships.
Job outlook
There are excellent job prospects for certified nurse assistants in long-term care. Because long-term patients need continuous care, both full- and part-time work is available for all shifts in nursing homes and other residential care facilities as well as in home health. Nurse assistants are also needed to work as technicians in hospital settings and to perform basic health care skills in outpatient clinics.
Earning potential
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics national median hourly earnings of nursing aides, orderlies, and attendants were $10.31 in 2005. The average hourly wage for Parkland graduates in 2003 was $10.88.
Career advancement
You’ll need additional formal training, often provided by employers, to advance to higher levels. Salary increases can come from your willingness to update your skills and assume new responsibilities.
Further education
IIHCP offers courses in occupational rehabilitation aide training and phlebotomy skills that increase the marketability of the CNA. Students may also continue their education by pursuing an associate’s degree in nursing.
